The Riverside neighborhood of Arlanza has very interesting roots dating back to World War II. In 1942, the Army bought over 1,000 acres of land just West of Van Buren Boulevard. This was here the army set up what later became Camp Anza. During World War II, camp Anza served as an embarkation point/staging center for more than 600,000 soldiers passing on to the Pacific, with more than 20,000 men housed at the camp at one time. After the war, the area started to populate as it became the Arlanza neighborhood in Riverside.
The old Army barracks were converted to homes on newly subdivided land. Arlanza’s history as a military encampment can be seen in some of the original Army structures that remain today! As you drive through this neighborhood, you can see this evidence for your self. The original officers building remained in the Neighborhood as a historical landmark. It serves as a reminder for the major impact this area of Riverside had during the war. The officers building has a great history, entertainers such as Bob Hope, Lena Horne, Orson Welles and Lucille Ball visited the camp during its heyday.
If you drive by the building today, you will not see a run down 1940’s officer building. In 2016, the city of Riverside completed its first affordable housing development for veterans. The building was restored and now houses 30 units for Veterans who earn between 30% and 60% of the area median income. Home Front at Camp Anza is now a proud area in the neighborhood of Arlanza and serves as powerful vessel to the community.
